Boat Licence and Charter: Let Us Clear This Up
One of the questions we are asked most often is this: "Do I need a boat licence to charter a boat?" The answer depends on a few things.
When You Do NOT Need a Licence
In Italy, no boat licence is required for:
- Motor boats up to 40 HP (29.4 kW)
- Sailing within 6 nautical miles of the coast
- Sailing boats up to 6 metres in length
When a Licence Is Required
A boat licence is mandatory for:
- Boats with an engine above 40 HP
- Sailing beyond 6 nautical miles from the coast
- Jet skis of any power output
- Sailing craft over 6 metres outside the 6-mile limit

What We Recommend
- For a relaxing day out, choose the skippered charter
- If you already hold a boat licence, we also offer bareboat charter
- For jet skis, a licence is always required
Note: the Sea-Doo jet skis in our fleet do require a boat licence. We do, however, run short accompanied tours for guests who do not hold one.
